Organize Your Yarn Stash – Tips and Ideas

yarnstasntitel

When you are a crafter, crocheter ot knitter you fall in love with yarn easily – but keeping all those yarn balls organized can be a challenge!

My yarn stash is terrible – I don’t have much space, I don’t have much containers, I love organizing but with my yarn stash I just can’t!

So I figured it would be nice to look out for some tips on how to organize your yarn stash.

Here are 5 tips on how to organize your yarn :

1. Colour

If the colour is the first thing to attract you in a yarn shop, you may like to organize your yarn by colours.

2. Fiber

Keep yarn of the same fiber together, e. g.: cotton to cotton, merino to merino. This way it is easy to find the right fiber for your future projects.

3. Weight

Sort your yarn by weight – when you find a pattern you would like to work on, it is easier to see if you have what you need for this pattern.

4. Projects

Especially if you are working on different projects at one time, it is useful to keep your projects tight!Keep your actual projects separate from your yarn stash. Store your actual work together with the hook you need for it and the printed pattern in an extra container.

5. Yarn Leftovers

Do not get rid of yarn scraps! They can still be so useful – for embroidery or even to stuff small toys or appliques!

Here are 6 ideas how to store your yarn:

1.Plastic bags

Like shopping bags or ziploc bags are an easy and cheap way to organize your yarn.

2. Plastic boxes with lids

They are cheap, inexpensive, stackable and available in different sizes – also, a lot of them are transparaent, so you can still enjoy the look at your yarns :)

Even old suitcases can be a yarn storage :)

3. Open boxes

I do use open baskets to stash my yarn. It gives you quick and easy access to your yarn or actual projects. On the other hand, it does not keep you yarn safe from dust or your kids or pet !

4. Closet or home organizers

There are many different organizers you can buy in DIY shops or furniture shops, such as shoe racks, wine racks or hanging storage items ( like the ones you use to store your kids toys).

5. Shelves

Shelves and bookcases are a very popular way to store and display your yarn.

6. Cupboards

Storing your yarn in a cupboard, makes it easily accessible and keeps it safe from dust, insects, kids and pets.

You see, there are a lot of ways to organize and a lot of containers to stash your yarn in!

I feel inspired to go and clean up my yarn stash right now :)

Back from Italy

Ciao my dear crocheters!

After one beautiful week in italy, we are back in good old Vienna :)
We had one lovely week, full of sunshine, sea breezes, ice cream and sand castles.

Here are some impressions from Jesolo:

wavesitalyfootprintsitaly

We have also spent one day in Venice – what a mystical and beautiful city! I loved the water canals, the gondolas, the Piazza San Marco and the Grand canal. Our little girl was fascinated by this city without streets and cars, but canals and gondolas instead.

It was the perfect summer family holiday – but now we are glad, we are back home :) though, it seems to be hotter here in Vienna than it was in Jesolo.

Something amazing happened last week – regarding this blog!

My flittering butterflies crochet pattern was featured on Hookin’ on Hump Day # 72 – a link party for the fiber arts, hosted by two fantastic bloggers : Tamara Kelly from Moogly and Sara from My Merry Messy Life.

HOHD-72

I’m so grateful and proud, that one of my patterns was featured – I’ve only applied the second time for the link party! And my link was the 3 rd most clicked out of 5.

Thank you all for your support and clicks :)  You can’t imagine how suprised I was, when I came home from italy and checked on my blog, only to find that my daily clicks have been sextuplet! It was amazing and I started laughing and crying and dancing all at once :) This link party is such a great idea to support all fiber artists out there.

So if you have projects you are very proud of, check “Hookin’ on Hump Day” out – everyone who has a fiber related project going on (that is posted on a blog or a website), is welcome to join!

How has your last week been ? I hope you liked last weeks edition of Friday Freebie’s :)

Of course, the next edition will be available on my blog this friday, I’m not quite sure what the topic will be – so if you have ideas or wishes – let me know :)

Happy Yarning

Good morning my dear crocheters!

This week will be a calm week, as we go on holidays to Italy :) I am looking forward to relaxation and recreation, and I am not going to take my hooks with me :P time to get a break and let inspire myself for further free patterns for you guys!

But don’t worry, Friday Freebie’s # 13 are planned and will go online on June 6th, as every week.

Here is a little poem to make you smile, it is orginally used for fathers day (I think) and it is a hint for the theme of this weeks free pattern roundup:

“Walk a little slower Daddy”

“Walk a little slower, Daddy!” said a little child so small.
“I’m following in your footsteps and I don’t want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they’re hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy, for you are leading me.

Someday when I’m all grown up, you’re what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child who’ll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you!”

(Author unknow).

I love this poem!

Have a great week and see you soon around here

Arrivederci

What Crochet Can Do For You And To You

healthcrochet

There are lot more reasons to start crochet than you might think. Not only that it is fun, creative and relaxing, there are numerous ways crocheting can help you improve your health.

Here is a list of health issues that can be improved by crocheting, knitting and other needle crafts:

  • Stress relief

One of the greatest health benefits of needlework is that it can help you prevent and reduce stress. Due to the repetitive motion of crochet stress can be reduced.

  • Memory Loss and Alzheimer

Studies show that those who are crocheting, knitting and sewing tend to have 50% less decrease in memory loss than those who arent. Isn’t that great news ?!

  •  Depression, Anxiety and Pain

Crochet is a focused activity that keeps both the mind and the hands busy.

This can help to reduce the effects of depression and reduce anxiety as well as lower your blood pressure.

Also some studies suggest that the repetitive work of crocheting may release serotonin to the body. Serotonin levels play an important role in pain management as well as in the treatment of depression.

Personally I also experienced that crocheting is helpful with anxiety issues, it helps me get out of the vicious circle of thinking and overthinking again and focus my mind on something different and delightful.

  • Self esteem

The whole thing about chosing the right project/design, the colours, the fiber you want to work with and of course creating something new and individual with your own hands does wonders for your self esteem.

  •  Social Benefits

Of course, there are also social benefits. Crocheting connects you to people in different ways:

  • to those you crocheted an item for
  • to other crocheters in groups
  • to a huge online community of crocheters

This kind of connection can also help to break the ice therapeutic groups.

Kathryn Vercillo, blogger and author of the book „Crochet Saved My Life“, has a lot of articles about the health benefits and therapeutic effects of crochet on her blog. Read more about this topic here.

On the other hand, crochet and knitting can also do some harm to our bodies. Here is a list of issues that may be caused by crocheting and tips on how to help with it:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Repetitive Strain Injury

Caused by the repetitive movement and the tension of holding yarn and needle, this syndrome leads to pain and/or numbness in the fingers and wrists.

Frequent breaks and hand stretches can help a lot here:

  •  Pain

Sitting and looking down on your work for hours can lead to pain in your neck, back and arms.

Here are some tips on the right positioning  (found on Petals to Picots):

  • Make sure you have a comfortable chair with good back support
  • Place your feet flat on the floor and your knees level with or slightly higher than your hips; use a footstool if necessary
  • Sit up straight!
  • Keep your elbows close to your sides and your project in your lap.

  • Eye strain and Headaches

Keeping your eyes focused on your project for too long can lead to eye strain and even headaches. Make sure you are working under good lighting and make frequent breaks to relax your eyes and change your focus every now and then by looking at something more distant (look out the window ect,).

This article only shows a summary of some effects of crocheting on your body and mind.

Crochetier is Complete !

Good morning!

Last week my husbands colleague Theresa was working very hard to design a logo for Crochetier.com.

I wanted it to contain some kind of Tierchen and some colour and of course yarn and hook. Theresa did a perfect job and draw the cutest Tierchen ever for my logo. Thank you so much!

It took a while to decide, which one to use, especially which font, but here it is :

Crochetier_Logo_FINAL-02

Crochetier_Logo_FINAL-01

I love it !

I hope you guys like it too :)

Crochetier_Logo_FINAL-05

And of course, she also created a copyright picture, so now I have a copyright protection logo for my own designs.

So now it is: all the pictures off the blog, put a Tierchen on them and upload them again to the blog WAAAAAAHHHH I guess this will take some days LOL

Did I say I love the logo already ? :)

Cheers
