All About The Hooks

There are so many parts of a crochet hook – and all are important to get the result out of your work you want!

So let’s break it down!

1. The Tip:

The tip can be pointy or round.

Round tips are better when you have a loose twisted yarn, so you wont get stuck inbetween the yarn thread when going through the stitch.

Pointy tips are better when your stitching is a little tighter or you are working through a mulitlayered stitch. Also when you use very thin yarn a pointy tip may help you get through the stitches as well.

2. The Hook:

This part of the crochet hook is very important: the function of the hook is to catch the strand of yarn and hold it in place while passing through the next stitch. If the hook area is too short or too rounded, working your way through stitches can become very frustrating!

3. The Throat:

The throat comes in a lot of different shapes: long or short, round or grooved, deep or more even.

I do prefer hooks with a deep and short throat to keep the yarn strand in place – especially when you have multilayered stitches.

4. The Shank:

The shank mostly varies in length. It depends on your hand size and length of fingers, which length of a crochet hook you need. It’s  a personal preference you have to make to make sure the hook fits into your hand easy, this is especially important when you crochet for long periods of time.

5. The Thumb Rest:

This area is the key to comfort while crocheting!

Some crochet hooks don’t have a designated area for your thumb while others have a clearly located thumb rest area. I do prefer a clearly located thumb rest area, it is just more handy when crocheting for a long time.

6. The Handle:

The handle can vary in length. Again it is a matter of your hand size/finderlength and of course of your personal preferences, which hook you take. Longer hooks may be more comfy when working for a long time.

Also the shape of the handle can be different from brand to brand: some are simply round, some are more flat and some are ergonomically designed.

There are much more different styles of crochet hooks than you think!

Not only does their shape differ, there are hooks made of steel, made of different kind of wood, or made of plastic.

Some hooks are more like a total work of art (especially those made out of wood) and some even have light included (which is AWESOME!)!

Here are some pictures to inspire you for your next hook hunt:
